A Shared History Between Sri Lanka and India The relationship between Sri Lanka and India is one of the world’s most enduring cultural bonds, stretching back over two millennia. Rooted in geography, spirituality, trade, and artistry, the two nations have been connected by the waters of the Indian Ocean and the threads of history that continue to inspire collaboration today. From the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE, carried by Emperor Ashoka’s emissaries, to centuries of literary, artistic, and architectural exchanges, India and Sri Lanka have shared not just borders, but ideals, stories, and traditions. The great epics — the Ramayana and the Mahavamsa — intertwine their histories, reflecting how mythology and
heritage have shaped both societies. This deep connection has flourished through trade routes, migration, and cultural exchange, with Indian music, dance, cuisine, and cinema leaving a lasting imprint on Sri Lankan society. Similarly, Sri Lanka’s own artists, performers, and creative talent have made valuable contributions to Indian cultural life, particularly in the world of film, art, and literature. Cinema has become a modern bridge between Sri Lanka and India, with Indian films captivating Sri Lankan audiences and Sri Lankan talent contributing to Indian cinema. This festival celebrates that shared journey and the cultural exchange it represents. As we celebrate the Indian Film Festival Sri Lanka, we honor this 2,000+ year history of friendship and cultural synergy, while looking forward to a future where cinema continues to unite and inspire both nations.
